Frequently Asked Questions
ETIQUETTE:
Here are a few helpful hints on appropriate etiquette for the yoga classroom.
Make it part of your yoga practice to arrive early. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before class so you can settle in. Give yourself time to check-in, change clothes, and quiet your mind before class. If you do arrive late, please politely prepare yourself for class at the door (put away your keys, remove your coat, etc) and have your mat ready to unroll quietly. For your physical safety and for respect to others in the class, we do not accept late entry after the first 5 minutes.
Please refrain from using your cell phone in the practice space. This is a “cell phone-free” zone. Please silence all ringers, and put them away upon entering the space. If you do need to keep your phone close for business or family reasons, please let the instructor know before class and set up close to the door so you can quietly step out if it becomes necessary for you to use it.
Please consider others by avoiding leaving early. Savasana (Final Rest) is an important aspect of your practice, so please take the time to finish class. If you do need to leave early, please set up near the doors and notify the teacher prior to class. Quietly leave prior to Savasana so as to not disturb the other students.
Have an open mind and a compassionate heart. Please enter the studio with kindness and without judgement of others or yourself. Treat your fellow students and the staff with respect and care.
Leave the studio space looking better than when you came in. Kindly put away all of your props neatly. Wipe up any of your sweat left on the floor and clean up the space you used.
CHOOSING A CLASS:
All classes are suitable for beginners however some classes are faster paced than others to find out more information on each class you can click the “Class Descriptions” to get a description of each class type. If you need assistance, call us for some guidance.
The best thing to do is to try several classes and keep an open mind. Every class at Sweetgrass offers something a little different. No two teachers are exactly alike. If you are brand new to yoga, consider joining the Never Been || Been A While series to learn all of the basics of a flow class. Most importantly, remember that no matter which class you attend, listen to your body and go at the pace that is right for you. There is always Child’s Pose!
FIRST CLASS:
Yoga is done barefoot and in comfortable clothes that you can move in easily. Avoid clothes that are too loose and baggy as they may get in your way.
Please arrive at least 10 minutes before class so you can settle in. As a first time student, you may have some forms to complete.
Bring a mat, a towel (if you’d like) and water.
Drink plenty of water before and after your practice.
Please inform your instructor of any physical limitations.
Avoid eating a heavy meal 2 hours before class. A light, healthy snack is okay.
NO cell phones in the practice space.
Keep an open mind and be patient with yourself. Just like anything in life, it takes time to adapt to something new. Take a few classes to see if this is right for you. All instructors are available after class for questions.
Always listen to your body—don't push yourself beyond what you are capable of just to keep up with the rest of the class. If it gets to be too much, spend time in child's pose until you are ready to jump back in.
Know that after each class you will get stronger both physically and mentally. Enjoy the journey!

Restrooms are located just outside the studio as you exit to the right. We do not have dedicated changing rooms or showers.
COVID/SICKNESS:
As a studio, we will monitor and follow New River Health District policies concerning COVID. If you are concerned about being in our space, please come visit to take a look or call with questions. Masks in consideration of others are always welcome, even if you just are feeling under the weather.
INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY:
Parking lot and sidewalks will be evaluated early in the morning on bad weather days. We will post on social media and place a scrolling message at the top of our website homepage letting students know whether we are open. We will not follow MCPS policy. Please use your personal judgement should you decide to come to the studio. We understand people have different comfort levels with driving in the ice/snow. If you HAVE a class scheduled and you do not plan to attend PLEASE cancel yourself out of the class as a courtesy to our teachers so they can stay home if a class is empty.
